This is who we are!
My Family
As part of our project “This is who we are” we studied the theme: My Family.
Students drew a picture of their family using their family portrait. They enjoyed looking at their family and remembering the moment when the photo took place.

Here are some samples:
They also shared their favorite family activity and wrote it in a sentence.
I read the book “The Family Book” by Todd Parr and we talked about how all families are different and that it is okay.
These activities gave us the opportunity to know each other better and to build community.
Myself
We started the year with a project called “This is who we are”. This project is about getting to know each other and building community. In these first two weeks of school children have played and participated in activities that have helped them learn characteristics about each other.
Students studied their faces in the mirror to make a self-portrait. They first made a sketch paying attention to the shape and size of their face, eyes, nose, mouth, ears and neck. Then they noticed their eyebrows and eyelashes and added them to the sketch. At the end, they added hair and special details like freckles, scars or other personal characteristics.

When the sketch was finished, students added color using our People Colors crayons. Students noticed that we all have different skin, hair and eye color. We talked about how we are all different and unique and that is what makes us special.
I read the book It’s O.K. to be Different by Todd Parr. This led to a conversation about many other differences people can have and that they are okay. We also read the book I like myself by Karen Beaumont, and gave each child a turn to share something they like about themselves and why they like it. It was a fun way to learn more about each other. After reading this book, each child got a turn to see their face in a mirror and say out loud: “I like myself!”.
I introduced the poem I AM SPECIAL AS I CAN BE by Mabel Watts to emphasize how we are all different and unique and that is what makes us who we are. We have been practicing the poem and children enjoy how it sounds.

These activities gave us the opportunity to reflect on how enriching it is to grow in a diverse community and how we can learn from each others’ differences.
“The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people.”
