Art Is Everywhere!
Self-portraits With Different Media
Students started the year drawing a self-portrait using a pencil and crayons. By now they are familiar with the process of studying their face in a mirror to sketch a detailed self-portrait.
We talked about different famous artists: Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Salvador Dalí and Margaret Keane. We searched online and found their photos and self-portraits and compared them. Students noticed how the artists were careful to make their picture exactly like their faces.

They also noticed how each artist used different media and showed a different painting style.
We talked about the different media and decided to use watercolor, charcoal, tempera and pastel to paint their own self-portraits. We also talked about how each artist adds details like a hat or accessories to make the picture more personal. Students were inspired and used this knowledge while working on their art piece.

Students used the iPad to carefully study and compare the photo and paint. They noticed how each artist has his/her own style and how each artist added different details, for example: Frida added a necklace and Monet a beret. After observing Monet's painting, Daniel decided to add a cap to his self-portrait.
Free Painting
After this activity children wanted to work with the four media. Each student got the opportunity to draw and paint with each one of the materials. This time the theme of the drawing was open. We looked online for pictures painted with each of the four media. We also checked out books from the library that showed the work of different artists. This helped students get ideas of what to draw and paint. Some students decided to copy a famous painter’s style, other children decided to do their own style. All the pictures showed creativity and dedication.

Students enjoyed feeling the different sensations and textures each material produced in their pictures. They used their imagination and freely expressed their feelings and ideas. Painting represents a way for them to share their inner world.
Children reflected on what they learned and liked about art. They drew a picture and wrote a sentence about it.
