By Author: Todd Parr
We will be studying different authors throughout the year. We started off by learning about Todd Parr. For the project This Is Who We Are we used his books to illustrate the following concepts:
The Family Book to talk about how all families are different
I’ts Okay To Be Different to talk about how the richness of a community is in its diversity
The Feelings Book to help children understand the different feelings they can have
The Thankful Book to emphasize the importance of being thankful for what makes up our lives
It’s Okay To Make Mistakes to talk about how mistakes are opportunities to learn something new and that we can always try again and gain confidence
The Peace Book during peace week to talk about what peace means and how each one of us can contribute with our actions to promote peace in the world
We also read: Reading Makes you Feel Good, We Belong Together, The I Love You Book, and The I’m Not Scared Book.

We researched online to learn more about Todd Parr. We visited his official site and read his biography. In his biography he talks a little bit about his childhood and the path he followed to become an author and illustrator. This helped children understand that Todd Parr was a little boy once, that he liked to make stories, draw and color and when he grew older he decided to make more books and publish them so people could buy them. I talked to students about how each one of them is already an author and illustrator because they create stories and write them in books accompanied by drawings. The only difference between them and Todd Parr is that they are 5 years old and Todd Parr is older. (Photo taken from his website: Todd And Bull)
After this, students went in front of the class and read the books they worked on this week to their friends. Students were respectful and interested while listening to the stories their friends created.
Children in kinder 10 will continue to develop their compositional and functional writing skills to continue to grow as authors.
